Chris Garces, Assistant Professor of Anthropology, was awarded a seed grant from the Mario Einaudi Center for International Studies in support of his interdisciplinary project “An Ethnographic and Legal Collaboration to Develop a Hemispheric Institute for Carceral Studies.”
The grant funding will support initiatives in Hemispheric Carceral Studies at Cornell University. Chris Garces (Department of Anthropology) and Joe Marguilies (Professor of Government and the Cornell Law School) will collaborate on this project. Along with Latin American Studies Program (LASP) Research Associate Sache Darke, Garces will travel to Dominican Republic, Brazil, and Ecuador to study how prisoners organize themselves both autonomously and in relation to prison administrations. Joint legal and ethnographic research will be necessary in order to understand the legal instruments as well as the social technologies of prison governance within, as well as beyond, the US prison security model.
