Yvette Reyes '26, a triple major in Anthropology, English, and American Studies, reflects on her experiences at Cornell prior to graduation.
What inspired you to choose anthropology as your major?
I chose to major in Anthropology after working with Saida Hodžić in the Nexus Scholars Program. Her work and passion for abolitionist and feminist frameworks were deeply inspiring and intellectually engaging to me. I am grateful to have begun my research career under her mentorship and to have received her guidance throughout my independent research experience.
What advice would you give to incoming anthropology majors?
One piece of advice I would give to incoming Anthropology majors is not to be afraid to attend office hours; they all love to talk more about related (and unrelated) work. I would also encourage students not to be afraid of adding another major, especially since Anthropology can overlap theoretically and intellectually with so many other disciplines. Most importantly, do not give up on yourself. Anthropology challenges the way you think about the world, but that challenge can also become one of the most rewarding parts of the major.
