Emma Garcia '25 shares her experience minoring in anthropology as she reflects on her time at Cornell before graduation.
What is your major?
I am a Biology and Society Major.
Do you have any favorite classes or have there been professors who have influenced your studies?
I have taken incredible courses that have profoundly changed my perspective on medicine and the significance of considering the broader context in which people live. A few standout courses that have inspired me include: Dr. Stacey Langwick's ANTHR 4442, which examined various interpretations of toxicity and the concept of place; Dr. Matthew Velasco’s BSOC 3235, focused on Bioarchaeology; and Dr. John Henderson’s ANTHR 3255, which centered on Ancient Mexico and Central America, exploring the traditions and places through a region that holds deep meaning for me.
Do you have any advice for students considering a minor in Anthropology?
To anyone considering the Anthropology minor, you should take that first step and take the courses. The department truly cares about the students they teach, and the professors are always willing and helpful. I found the Anthropology minor towards the second half of undergrad, and it has still greatly impacted me for the better.
