March and Holmberg to receive Sir Edmund Hillary Mountain Legacy Medal

David Holmberg and Kathryn March, faculty emeritus in , will receive the 2021 Sir Edmund Hillary Mountain Legacy Medal for their contributions to cultural preservation, social equity, and educational opportunity among mountain communities in Nepal.

"The March-Holmberg legacy stands as a shining example of a lifetime commitment to scholarship, teaching and service," said Dr. Alfred Pach III (anthropologist and long-time Nepal hand).

The Hillary Medal award event will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 11th at the Southside Community Center in Ithaca, NY.

The Sir Edmund Hillary Mountain Medal was established in 2003 with the express approval of Sir Edmund Hillary himself and is awarded annually "for remarkable service in the conservation of nature and the equitable advancement of human welfare in mountainous regions." The Medal both recognizes Sir Edmund’s enduring commitment to the welfare of mountain people and their environment and also encourages the continuing emulation of his example.
