Emily Hong and Mariangela Mihai Jordan, PhD students in the Department of , received a grant from Humanities New York for their joint project "Nobel Nok Dah Film Discussion Guide: Centering Women’s Stories in Experiences of Refugee Resettlement."
This grant will enable Mihai Jordan and Hong to work with a team to develop a film discussion guide/curriculum for “Nobel Nok Dah” for use by refugee services and education providers in New York State, with the aim of building cross-cultural understanding and cooperation in communities with large populations of refugees. “Nobel Nok Dah” is a 23-minute documentary co-directed by Emily Hong, Mariangela Mihai, and Miasarah Lai. The film explores the journeys of three female Karen refugees who fled their homes, experienced forced labor in Thailand, and were finally resettled in the U.S.
Humanities New York provides leadership and support across the state through grants, programs, networking and advocacy, encouraging critical thinking and cultural understanding in the public arena.
The project is a partnership between Southeast Asia Program and Ethnocine, a film collective that Mariangela and Emily co-founded. Magnus Fiskesjö, Associate Professor in the Department of , is the Principle Investigator for this project.
