The Department of is pleased to announce that Arianne Seenauth was awarded an Engaged Learning in Scholarship. She will use funds from this scholarship to conduct research in New York City and virtually in Puerto Rico for her honors thesis. Arianne is a senior majoring in anthropology and minoring in Spanish. She describes her research project below:
My project seeks to explore notions of cultural identity and belonging in Puerto Ricans among fluid citizenship and territorial statuses under United States law over time. It’s goal is to better understand how Puerto Ricans have and are continuing to respond to colonial, territorial, and legal control by the United States as expressed through art and visual culture.
This project is a combination of my passions - understanding processes of institutionalization, expressions of self and ideology through visual means, and diving into concepts of identity and how people view themselves and make sense of the world around them.

The Engaged Learning in Scholarship was established by an anonymous donor to support students who seek training in anthropological techniques or who would like to participate in anthropologically-oriented engaged learning opportunities. The Department of is grateful for these Scholarships and for the opportunities they've given to many students over the years for transformative research and life-changing experiences.
